この曲は2021年の12月のクリスマスにリリースされました。
もともとはエルトンのコラボレーション・アルバム『ザ・ロックダウン・セッションズ』のクリスマス・エディションに収録されており、エド・シーランの方も当初は5枚目のスタジオ・アルバム、現在は削除されているクリスマス・エディションに収録されていたようです。

Wikipediaの情報によると、2021年11月、TV番組に出演した際、 エド・シーランは、曲のコーラスを書いた後エルトンの家に泊まりに行き、最終的に一緒に3曲のクリスマス・ソングを作ることになり、そのうちの1つが「メリー・クリスマス」だった、そうです。
