◆この曲はアルバム「Rising」タイトル曲。
2002年、Bruce SpringsteenのEストリートバンドと共に作成したアルバムとしては18年振りと聞いて、僕は発売日当日にこのCDを購入しました。しかし、第一印象は暗く、重い…。どうしてもBGMって風には聴けないのです。
このアルバムはブルースが9.11を機会にしてそれ以降の世界のなかでの心の状況をアルバムにした、と聞いていたから…。

表題からして「9.11」についてイメージさせる曲もあります。「孤独な日」「あなたが恋しい」という曲、「世界が割れている」「友人になろう」と異質な文化がわかりあえるように呼びかけているような曲、「奇跡を信じてる」「楽園」「廃墟と化した私の街」…。
なかでもアルバム表題曲「The Rising」は2曲目の「Into The Fire」と対をなしています。「Into The Fire」は9.11の救助活動で命を犠牲にした消防士に対してその妻（恋人）が呼びかける歌で、「The Rising」はその消防士が主人公。ギリギリの局面のなかで彼は「生きる夢 今生きたいと思う どん詰まりで のたうちまわるナマズのように」と思うのです。
哀しみを越えて「顔を上げよう」「立ち上がろう」という歌詞は、「The Rising」とこのアルバムの締めくくりの曲である「My City Of Ruins」のなかにも出てきます。（Come on、Rise Up!）」
何人かの政治家は、かつてBruceのアルバム、曲「Born In The USA」を「アメリカ意識の高揚」をさせるために使い、この「The Rising」もそのように扱った不届き者もいたようです。
The Risingのアルバムの歌詞を訳した三浦久さんのアルバム解説がSONY MUSICのWebサイトに出ていましたが、そのなかで三浦さんがローリングストーン誌のエッセイ（カート・ロウダー）を紹介しています。
主旨は「The Risingはともすれば「報復のために立ち上がれ」と誤解されがちだが、ブルースは報復に関心を持っていない。彼の関心は増え続ける死者と憎しみを我々が超越して立ち上がろう」と言っているんだということ。
アルバム「The Rising」とこの曲「The Rising」は時間をとってじっくりと聴いてみたいアルバムの１枚です。
◆ここ日本でもブルースと一緒にこの曲を歌いたいな…。
